Latvian Literature Grant Program for Publishers
Applications are now open for its grant program to provide financial support to foreign publishers who are publishing Latvian literature, thereby promoting the interest of foreign publishers in Latvian literature and its translations into different languages.
The program supports the publication of Latvian prose, poetry, drama, non-fiction including essays and memoirs, journalism, literature for children and young adults, comics and graphic novels, classic literature, as well as culturally and historically significant publications connected to Latvia in the context of current global events. The initiative is organized and administered by the Latvian Literature and financed by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia to encourage foreign publishers’ interest in Latvian literature and its translation into different languages.
Applicants can apply for financial support of up to 2,000 EUR for book production costs. In exceptional cases, the expert committee may allocate a larger amount if the project demonstrates remarkable artistic quality and strong potential for promoting Latvian literature internationally. Eligible costs include copyright or licensing fees and printing expenses, while shipping and print-on-demand costs are excluded. The program also does not support costs already financed through other public funding sources.
Foreign publishers that are legal entities and have experience working with foreign authors are eligible to apply under the program. The grant supports only previously unpublished translations and does not provide support for eBooks, re-publications, or additional print runs of previously published books. Applications must be completed in English and submitted through the Latvian Literature website.
Required documents include a completed application form with the publication budget in euros, an edited translation excerpt with the corresponding original text, the translator’s CV, a copy of the agreement with the copyright holder, and a copy of the translator’s contract. Publishers are also encouraged to provide a catalogue or list of books published during the past two years or a website link containing this information. All signed documents must be submitted as scanned copies.
