The Africa Fellows in Education Program (AFEP) offers a unique opportunity for young African researchers to engage in impactful education policy research and evidence-based decision-making.
This two-year, fully supported fellowship aims to strengthen expertise in evaluating educational research, developing performance data, and integrating rigorous evidence into policymaking processes across Sub-Saharan Africa.
About Africa Fellows in Education Program
AFEP fosters a network of local policy fellows equipped with advanced skills in assessing educational research, leveraging data for decision-making, and influencing policy through evidence.
The program combines in-country activities, regional and international training, and conference participation, including prominent events on the economics of education.
Fellows will undertake research projects under mentorship from globally recognized experts, including teams from Stanford University and other international organizations.
Program Highlights
- Research and Policy Development: Develop and implement a research or evaluation project in your home country with guidance from local scientific mentors.
- Training Opportunities: Attend short courses in evaluation methods, communication, incentive structures, testing, and performance measurement tailored to fellows’ needs.
- International Exposure: Participate in two major international conferences on education economics.
- Networking: Join a regional and global community of policymakers, researchers, and education experts.
- Mentorship and Support: Receive continuous support from a team of advisors during and after the fellowship.
Funding and Support
- Research Grant: USD 25,000 for research activities.
- Additional Coverage: Up to USD 25,000 for mentorship, conference travel, and in-country workshops.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be nationals of a Sub-Saharan African country.
- Be aged 35 or younger.
- Hold a Master’s or PhD in a relevant field with a strong quantitative focus.
- Demonstrate experience in quantitative data analysis.
- Show interest in education policy research and analysis.
- Be affiliated with a government, research, or higher education institution.
- Be proficient in English.
- Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
